FOCUS ON FITNESS
Don’t find yourself in a pickle this year––wear eye protection when playing pickleball!

The sport is gaining popularity and pickleball-related eye injuries are on the rise.  Reported injuries include corneal abrasions, lacerations, retinal detachment and other serious trauma from contact with the ball, paddle, or from falls.

Group activities are a great way to stay active, social, and manage stress—just don’t forget to protect your gift of sight!

ASK DR. IRIS – QUESTIONS FROM THE EXAM CHAIR
Q: What is the purpose of dilation?
A: To view the structures inside the eye, we use a verybright light, which naturally causes the pupil to constrict. This limits how much we can see.

Dilation drops relax the iris muscle, allowing the pupil to open larger so we can get a better view of the lens, vitreous, and retina. This helps us detect conditions such as cataracts and retinal changes more effectively.

EATING FOR YOUR EYES
The online publication Women in Optometry offers a free online recipe book and video series of “Nutrasmoothies” to support eye and general health. You can find all of these by visiting their website and searching “Nutra smoothie.”

Try my favorite!

Vitality NutraSmoothie
Ingredients:

  • ½ to 1 cup frozen spinach
  • ½cup frozen kale
  • A handful of fresh or frozen blueberries
  • ½ cup pitted, frozen cherries
  • ¼ cup walnuts (or chia seeds for a non-allergen option)
  • 1 to 1 ½ cups unsweetened almond/coconut milk
  • 1 tablespoon cocoa powder

Optional: ½ banana for sweetness.
Blend on high for 2 minutes.

Plan Ahead Tip: Prepare individual smoothie ingredients (exclude the liquid) in advance and freeze. When ready to use, add liquid, blend, and enjoy a quick, healthy option on busy mornings!

TESTIMONIAL

"Met with Dr. Iris yesterday for the first time and I liked her very much. The office was run professionally and the toughest part was to pick out my glasses frame. Another successful visit. Thank You"
